Entries and links

A universe's lore is a set of entries, each of one kind, each with its own page in the sidebar:

Kind What it is
Characters Everyone in the universe, with their family and allegiances
Events Dated moments, with their significance and impact
Eras Named spans of history, and who held control in each
Factions Orders, agencies, nation states and rebellions
Locations Places of interest
Objects Artifacts, relics and other things
Articles Long-form lore, such as a concept, a language or a deeper history

Each kind is described on its own page: Characters, Events, eras and factions and Locations, objects and articles.

Making and changing an entry

Each kind's list has a New button, and every entry an Edit button, which open the entry in a drawer. Changes are saved as you make them, and show at once to anybody else with the entry open (see Editing together). A list can be narrowed by typing in its filter box.

Every entry has a key as well as a name: a short, unique name within its universe that links use.

Blank means undecided

A field you leave blank is shown as not decided yet, never as missing and never guessed at. An event with no year is left off the timeline rather than placed somewhere plausible, and a character with no birth year is placed on the family tree by their relatives, marked as an estimate. Exports say the same: blank fields are undecided, not missing.

Years

Entries that happen in time take a start year and an end year, and some a line saying when in the world's own words ("the 1600s", "Unknown to present"). Eras and factions can be marked Ongoing: still running at the end of the recorded timeline. Any year shown on an entry's page is a link to everything else that falls in it, in the Year Explorer.

Any entry can link to any other in the same universe, of any kind: a character who appears in an event, a key character of a faction, an event that takes place at a location. On an entry's page, Links from here lists what it links to, and Referenced by what links to it. Add link picks the kind and the entry, and an optional role, which says what the link asserts, read from this entry to the other ("appears in", "takes place at").

Removing a link puts it in the recycle bin, from which it can be restored.
